Leadership Advantage

 

A half-day, experiential skill-building workshop, Leadership Advantage
offers prospective and current nonprofit volunteers and professional
employees an opportunity to network with their peers as well as
refine their professional skills on topics such as organizational
governance, fundraising, strategic planning, and program measurement &
evaluation.

A.       Board 101:  The Basics about Board Membership

Presenters:  Carol Deem & Kim Ronald Smith

Are you aware of all the responsibilities that are present when you are on a nonprofit Board?  The session will address both legal and practical issues relating to serving on the board of a not-for-profit entity.

B.       Board Governance: An Advanced Discussion

Presenter:  Ron Kratofil

Everyone agrees that boards govern and staff manage, but what exactly is governance?  Is governance a truly unique discipline or is it a super layer of (micro) management?  Based on the work of John Carver, Ph.D., this session will help the participants develop an organizational understanding and theoretical model in order to better balance the sometimes confusing roles of governing and managing in a not-for-profit organization!

C.       My Non-Profit Should be doing WHAT?

Presenter:  Tracey Rash

Can your non-profit afford to be left behind?  Changes within the non-profit industry are being quickly advanced by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations (BCO), watchdog groups, and even political groups.  This course will focus on the best practices on board/committee involvement in the financial reporting process, policies you should have in place to protect yourself from the IRS and the BCO, and other changes being promulgated by various organizations.

D.       Coaching & Motivating for Employee Performance and Development

This course is an overview 10 key steps of the coaching process and give the participant tools and strategies to employ in the coaching process. Participants will practice the application of learning and the sharing of ideas and thoughts within the group, successes and stumbling blocks will foster these discussions.

E.       Polishing Your Program’s Performance Appraisals

Presenter:  Anne Gingerich

Do you want to tweak your methods for constructing and tracking program outcomes?  This workshop introduces participants to the Logic Model, an impact-oriented framework used to measure and report the benefits that clients experience through program interaction. Presentation and interactive activities will convince you of this tool’s potential for use in program management, reports to fundraisers and marketing materials.

F.       How to Stage a Profitable Special Event Fundraiser: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to determine which fundraiser is right for your organization. How to organize the production. Finding, motivating & using volunteers, board members & in-house staff. Negotiating vendor contracts. How to create a realistic budget, including projecting your “profit”, controlling costs & pricing your event. The Five secrets that make a special event “special”.  Marketing tips to increase event income.  Planning for catastrophes.

Hunter, you will explore the characteristics that will help you be a more effective leader: patience, kindness, humility, respectfulness, selfishness, forgiveness, honesty and commitment.

I.     Developing and Executing a Media Relations Strategy

Through classroom discussion, Lancaster’s General’s chief media spokesman will review how to leverage media relations by identifying your key audiences and the communication vehicles they find most credible, to raise awareness and preference for your organization, regardless of its size or purpose.

J.     Legislative Advocacy:  Making the Case for Change

Presenter:  Fran Rodriguez

Taking your organization’s case to local, state and federal elected officials is an important part of your job as a board leader.  What role does a legislative district office really play in your community?  Learn about the importance and value you have by engaging in ongoing discussions with legislators and senators.  What’s the difference between advocacy and lobbying?  As a board leader, you must establish a network with elected officials when seeking the most up-to-date information and resources.

K.    Tearing Down the Walls: Non-Profit Leadership for Sustainability… with Style!

Presenter:  Susan C. Eckert

Are you asking potential major donors to give at the right time?  Understanding current philanthropic trends by both individuals and corporations will increase your prospects for closing that gift. This workshop will explore current patterns of giving and find effective ways to approach others for generous contributions. We will look at motivations for giving, fears of asking and how to identify who and when to ask.
